Pre-registration

Submit by e-mail to the organizing committee your intent to participate in RoboCup by January 31st, 2012. The e-mail subject should be: 2012 Participation Intent (YourTeamName). Please also include:

  • Team Name
  • Country of Origin
  • University
  • Name of your main contact
  • Email of your main contact
  • Website (if you have one)

Qualification Criteria

Every team interested in to participate must complete the following actions by February 28th, 2012 (11.59 PM, GMT+1):

  • Submit a Team Description Paper (TDP).
  • Submit a Team Video.
  • Must have completed the pre-registration procedure within its deadline.
  • Special qualification criteria will apply to the top 8 teams as well as any teams that forfeited games from Robocup 2011. See below for details.

Please pay attention to the following points:

  • Communication will be made via e-mail, using the Small Size mailing list. Pay attention to these e-mails and answer the OC's questions. A team that does not reply risks losing its qualified place.
  • We understand that new teams may struggle meeting all of the qualification criteria below. We encourage new teams to submit qualification video material demonstrating their true current capabilities, while stating in their Team Description Paper (TDP) what is expected to be completed by June 18th, 2012. However, teams not meeting minimum required criteria will be considered for inclusion only after all teams submitting compliant qualification materials.
  • Each team that has passed the qualification or in the waiting list must submit a message to the organizing committee to confirm whether the team has enough financial support to attend the competition. This message must be sent before April 20th, 2012 (11.59 PM, GMT+1). If a team in the qualified list cannot attend the competition, a team from the waiting list will be selected in the waiting order.

Submission of your Team Description Paper (TDP)

The Team Description Paper should focus on one or two main components of your developed system. We recommend you to choose topics that you feel are especially novel, important, or different from how other teams approach the problem. It is especially important to have clear and focused explanations. You can assume that the audience is familiar with general Small Size League topics and can thus devote most of the TDP to the important issues. In particular, you should explain the technical details of how your approach works so that other researchers can repeat your results. In this way, other researchers can gain from your experience, as you will gain from theirs, and together we can achieve the goals of the RoboCup Initiative.

To avoid robots out of compliance with the Small Size Rules, the following information must be included in the Team Description Paper: the height of the robot, the maximum diameter of its projection to the ground, and the maximum percentage of ball coverage (as defined in the Small Size rules).

New teams should clearly state their current robot capabilities and what is expected to be completed by June 18th, 2012.

Submission Information:

  • The length of the TDP is limited to 12 pages.
  • Please use the same Springer LNAI format as the symposium submissions (see RoboCup Symposium instructions (the 2012 website does not have the format up yet)).
  • Papers should be sent as a zipped pdf or postscript file via e-mail to the organizing committee.
  • The e-mail subject should be: 2012 TDP (YourTeamName).

Submission of your Team Video

Your team video must be at least 1 minute of unedited continuous footage. The qualification video can be either of the following types, although preference will be given to item 1 (then 2 and last 3):

  1. A video of your robots participating in a RoboCup standard game (i.e. a game at RoboCup or one of the local regional competitions). The video should show obstacle avoidance, shooting and passing skill. The game should be based on contemporary rules (2009 and afterwards).
  2. A video of your robots (there must be at least two moving robots) engaging in two or more of the following activities: a) One or more robots competing against an active robot goalkeeper. b) Two or more robot field players actively going to the ball and playing against one another. c) At least two robots playing cooperatively against 5 static or moving obstacles.
  3. A video showing one or more robots partially demonstrating capabilities listed in item 2.

The team video is used by the OC to determine the readiness of a team to compete effectively and is part of the criteria in ranking teams in the qualification process. Teams are advised to submit a video that best demonstrates the readiness of the team to compete in an international competition.

Submission Information:

To submit the video footage, you must send an e-mail to the RoboCup Small Size mailing list and cc: it also to the organizing committee. The e-mail should contain the following information:

  • Subject: 2012 Qualification Video (YourTeamName)
  • The URL of your video, which must be available via ftp or http.

Please pay attention to the following:

  • Please submit a single video file.
  • The video must be stored on your own server or a reliable online video hosting service (it is better to provide more than 1 link to the video).
  • Do NOT send the video as an attachment to the mailing list nor to the organization committee!

Special Requirement for Top 8 Teams from RoboCup 2011

One of the best ways to provide a good start point for the new and young teams in the Small Size leagues is Learning from the Best. To achieve this goal, the committees agree to use the submittion of additional descriptive material as the procedure for selecting the seed teams in the competition schedule.

  • To be ranked as seed teams, the top 8 teams from the last competition are required to submit and present an Extended Team Description Paper (ETDP), according to the following guidelines:
  • The ETDP should describe in details the aspects of the team's system which most contribute to its performance, and/or the novel solutions employed.
  • The ETDP should not include a full team description, overlapping with the TDP already submitted, but rather focus on the key aspects that allowed the team to achieve the top 8 rank.
  • To maximize the effectiveness of ETDPs, all top 8 teams are also requested to make a presentation of their ETDP at the competition event.
  • The ETDP should have at least 6 pages, and should be written in the same format as the TDP.
  • The evaluation of the ETDP is based on the Contribution to the Community criteria. This means that other teams (both new and veterans) should learn something from the contribution and be able to reproduce or use the information contained in the ETDP.
  • Because the committee needs to evaluate the quality of the ETDPs, teams are asked to submit the ETDP as soon as possible, at any time after the qualification procedure, to allow the committees enough time to evaluate and send feedback before the final decision is made.
  • The due date of the ETDP is April 1st, 2012 (11.59 PM, GMT+1)
  • Papers should be sent as a zipped pdf or postscript file via e-mail to the organizing committee.
  • The e-mail subject should be: 2012 ETDP (YourTeamName).
  • Rules regarding the judging of the EDTP papers and presentations will be coming soon

Special Requirement for Teams that Registered and Forfeited Games in RoboCup 2011

These rules will apply to your teams under any of the following conditions from the Robocup 2011 games:

  • Qualified and registered but did not show up to compete
  • Failed to have your robots partake in any dynamic play that would have been shown in your Qualification Video (ie: chasing the balls, kicking, interacting with other robots)
  • Forfeited more than one game
  • If you are unsure whether this applies to your team of feel that there were extremely extenuating circumstances, please email the OC

These rules were created to ensure that all teams had the fair opportunity to play against other teams at a certain level. Teams that forfeit many games or show up with robots unable to perform basic maneuvers are detrimental to the overall league.

The Rules (These are in addition to the TDP/Video Qualification Requirements):

Video:

The team must submit a video of at least two robots engaging in all three of the following activities with at least 1 minute of unedited continuous game play: a) one or more robots competing against an active robot goal keeper, b) two or more robots actively going to the ball and playing against one another and c) at least two robots playing cooperatively against 5 static or moving obstacles, showing obstacle avoidance. Preference will be given to a video showing the robot and ball handling speeds to be at a minimum competitive level.

TDP:

The TDP must including three additional sections: 1) Trouble shooting the previous year: Explain where both technically and logistically (scheduling) the team faced problems in 2011, then 2) what is new this year that would address all of the previous years concerns and finally 3) the timeline for research and development to ensure a fully functioning team by the June 18th 2012. Section 3 can be omitted if the team submit's a video that shows full game play between a complete set of robots.

Notes on Seeding

  • The top eight teams of the previous RoboCup have always been seeded for the round robin state of the competition, i.e. the top four became the heads of the four round robin groups, the other quarter finalists have also been distributed evenly. This is done to avoid an early elimination of potentially strong teams. Seeding
  • The seeding program takes into account to try to minimize placing teams from the same nation into the same round robin groups. We cannot however minimize these teams facing each other pass the round robin stage without almost eliminating the randomness of the group selections.
  • New this year, the 'bottom' four teams are also seeded to ensure that there is appropriate distribution not only the top teams, but the younger teams or teams which are facing some technical challenges (bottom four may also include teams that are 'conditionally' qualified')
